Its specific objectives were to: a) describe the socioeconomic profile of upland açaí producers and their production areas; b) understand the motivations behind expanding açaí cultivation to upland areas; and c) identify farmers' perceptions regarding the potential socioeconomic and environmental impacts of establishing upland açaí groves on the community, as well as their future outlook for this activity. The research employed a case study design based on exploratory research with a qualitative approach. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews using a questionnaire, observation, audio recording, photography (with prior authorization), and site visits to the açaí groves. Participants were selected based on two criteria: residing in the community and cultivating açaí on upland land. Eight individuals—six men and two women—were interviewed; all were owners of agricultural systems that included upland açaí cultivation as a subsystem. Field data collection took place between June 5 and July 15, 2025. The studied groves occupy areas previously used for cassava fields, secondary forest (capoeira), or primary forest. They were established primarily to produce fruit during the off-season, utilizing local seedlings sourced from the community's own floodplain (várzea) areas or nearby communities, as well as the BRS Pará variety (an Embrapa cultivar) and the chumbinho variety; both family and hired labor were employed for the technical operations involved in cultivation. Although these açaí groves significantly boost family income and create new job opportunities within the community, farmers face challenges in maintaining these production systems due to climate change, a lack of irrigation, and limited access to public policies and technical assistance and rural extension services (ATER). Environmental impacts associated with these cultivation systems include the replacement of native vegetation and reduced land availability for cassava farming. Despite these difficulties, the farmers demonstrate resilience, adapting and developing technologies to sustain upland açaí cultivation in the Tauerá-Açu community. Consequently, combining local knowledge, technical expertise, and financial support through public policies is essential to ensure the sustainability—as well as the economic and environmental viability—of upland açaí cultivation in traditional and family farming communities like the one studied.
