Established by the Instituto de Terras do Pará (ITERPA), PEAEX MAJARI I was created to regularize the occupation of family farmers from the traditional communities of São João and Espírito Santo on the Majari River and guarantee the permanence of the communities in their territories. The research developed is qualitative in nature using participant observation techniques and semi-structured interviews carried out with PEAEX MAJARI I settlers, community leaders and PEAEX institutional partners. It aims to characterize the conflicts that exist between settlers and external agents (farmers, land grabbers and loggers) taking into account the relevance of guaranteeing the permanence of traditional peoples and communities (PCTs) in their territories and the conservation of forest resources. A historical survey of the creation and consolidation of PEAEX Majari I was carried out, where it was possible to characterize the existing conflicts involving the settled families and these external agents, in addition to portraying the importance of traditional communities being the managers of their territories. It is concluded that the recognition of traditional territories is of great relevance for the PCTs, but the lack of assistance and surveillance from public authorities over these territories leaves such groups unassisted and fragile, resulting in social, environmental and economic conflicts with various external agents.
