The objective of the research was to investigate how students understand the concept of equation, identifying possible conceptual obstacles and levels of comprehension. The approach adopted was qualitative, with the application of two written activities to a class in a public school in the municipality of Bagre (PA). The data analysis allowed the responses to be categorized into four groups: students who correctly identified the equation but did not justify it; students who presented vague answers or answers disconnected from the mathematical content; students who used algebraic language correctly but without relation to the context; and students who demonstrated partial understanding, with conceptual errors related to the solution. The results indicate that traditional teaching, centered on the application of algorithms, contributes to mechanical and meaningless learning, which reinforces the importance of pedagogical practices that promote conceptual understanding and the development of algebraic thinking in elementary school.Acesso AbertoEquações do primeiro grauCompreensão conceitualEducação matemáticaFirst-degree equationsConceptual understandingMathematics educationCNPQ::CIENCIAS EXATAS E DA TERRA::MATEMATICA::ALGEBRAInvestigando a compreensão de uma turma do 9º ano do ensino fundamental sobre equações do primeiro grauTrabalho de Curso - Graduação - ArtigoAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Brazil
