Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8997This study aimed to analyze the challenges and perceptions of public high school students in Tracuateua (Pará, Brazil) regarding the Theory of Evolution. Through questionnaires, a certain trend towards the acceptance of the theory of evolution was observed. One of the main obstacles noted was the lack of knowledge or understanding of the fundamental theoretical aspects of evolution. The students demonstrated an understanding of concepts from 1 Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA) | 2 Lamarck's theory, such as the law of use and disuse and the inheritance of acquired characteristics. In Darwinian theory, the students showed difficulties with concepts such as natural selection and genetic variation. Regarding speciation, there is a tendency to adopt the creationist theory, thus denying that humans share a common ancestor with monkeys. When referring to human evolution, the students tend to adopt religious rather than scientific conceptions. A complex and multifaceted picture emerges concerning the acceptance and understanding of the theory of evolution. The research revealed that, although there is a general trend toward accepting the theory of evolution, there is substantial resistance. The results indicate the need for a more efficient and integrated pedagogical approach to teaching biological evolution.
