The research seeks to understand how reading instruction is developed in the school community and the challenges faced by students in constructing meaning from reading, considering cultural and pedagogical contexts. Using a qualitative approach, the research involved interviews with the teacher and the school principal, participant observation, and analysis of activities carried out with the class. The results highlight the importance of the sociocultural context for an effective teaching process in the community, revealing both challenges and potentialities among the students. It is concluded that contextualization and the appreciation of teaching practices contribute to richer education and the educational development of the community.
