This process leads to the wastage of economic resources, reduced operational efficiency, and even the deactivation of equipment, making it essential to take effective measures for its prevention and control. In this context, natural inhibitors, derived from essential oils extracted from different parts of plants (leaves, branches, roots, and bark), stand out. In addition to being a renewable source, these inhibitors are economically viable and environmentally sustainable. The application of these inhibitors is one of the main methods to reduce corrosion in metallic products, specifically in this study, carbon steel. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of cinnamon leaf essential oil (Cinnamomum Zeylanicum) as a natural corrosion inhibitor in carbon steel. The method used to assess the efficiency of the oils was gravimetric (mass loss). Corrosion tests were performed in a corrosive medium of 1M HCl. The concentrations of both essential oils used were 0.5g/L, 1g/L, 2g/L, and 4g/L, over periods of 24 hours and 7 days. In the 24-hour period, the maximum concentration of the inhibitor used (4 g/L) achieved an efficiency of 97.7% in the HCl medium. After 7 days, the same concentration of 4 g/L reached an efficiency of 99.7%. Additionally, a linear relationship was observed between the increase in the inhibitor concentration and anticorrosive efficiency, indicating that higher concentrations may provide even more effective protection against corrosion. Therefore, the results indicate that cinnamon leaf essential oil is a favorable natural inhibitor for the protection of carbon steel-based materials, demonstrating high effectiveness in preventing corrosion.
