The research adopts a qualitative, biographical approach, grounded in a literature review, historical documents, family records, and interviews with family members and local residents. The study engages with authors who discuss education, ethnic-racial relations, gender, and Maroon communities, highlighting the historical inequalities faced by Black women in Brazil. The results demonstrate that Vergelina played a significant role as a community leader, an advocate for schooling, a promoter of local culture, and an organizer of actions focused on collective well-being, leaving a legacy that transcends her lack of formal schooling. It concludes that her trajectory reaffirms education as a pathway to human emancipation, resistance, and the appreciation of ancestral wisdom, contributing to bringing visibility to the stories of Black women who are frequently silenced by official historiography.
