Dust suppression methods, such as spray nozzles, are widely used, but their efficiency varies depending on operational conditions. However, the lack of a standardized methodology for evaluating their performance makes it difficult to select the most suitable system, highlighting the need for a detailed study on their effectiveness. This study conducted experimental tests in a wind tunnel to assess the efficiency of different spray nozzles in controlling dust generated by pellet feed handling. Parameters such as nozzle type, spray pressure, and airflow velocity were evaluated. The results indicated that atomizing nozzles achieved higher efficiency in capturing airborne particles, especially under moderate pressure conditions. In contrast, conventional nozzles, such as full-cone and hollow-cone types, exhibited reduced efficiency under high airflow velocities. Additionally, it was found that higher pressures improved atomization and fine particle capture in atomizing nozzles, while conventional nozzles showed a drop in efficiency above 3 bar due to concentrated droplet dispersion. The developed methodology enabled an objective comparison between different dust suppression technologies, aiding in the selection of more effective solutions for industrial applications. Thus, this study contributes to the improvement of dust control strategies in mining by providing a standardized approach for evaluating the efficiency of spray nozzles and supporting the implementation of more effective and sustainable measures.
