The PAHs are persistent organic pollutants formed by two or more aromatic rings. These pollutants are widely distributed in the environment, generated mainly by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and oil spill. When released into the aquatic environment, these compounds may undergo various chemical and structural modifications that alter their interaction, distribution and length of stay in the environment. Given the complex behavior of PAHs in the environment and their toxic capacity, this study aimed to: a) investigate a preliminary way the marine diesel oil composition, with respect to PAHs, used by vessels in the Amazon region; b) to evaluate the variation in PAH concentrations in marine diesel oil under natural weathering; and c) adapt analytical method for PAHs in diesel oil using high performance liquid chromatography with detection efficiency by ultraviolet (HPLC-UV). An analytical method was inicially adapted to PAHs in diesel fuel, using HPLC-UV-C 16 column and acetonitrile and water as eluent. A good chromatographic resolution was obtained for the 16 priority PAHs in environmental studies and reproducibility with the application of the method to diesel samples. Two experiments were conducted, the first to analyze the effects of evaporation and photo-oxidation in PAH concentrations of the exposed oil for 30 days under natural conditions. The second experiment aimed to evaluate the possible effect of suspended particulate matter (SPM) on the concentrations of PAHs in diesel oil exposed in seawater sample. It was observed in the first experiment, that evaporation / photo-oxidation caused about 99% loss of PAHs in maritime oil diesel, with greater loss in the first 15 days of the experiment. Through second experiment, it was noted that the SPM showed no significant effect on PAH concentrations of marine diesel oil. The results of application of the adjusted method were satisfactory, allowing detection in diesel oil of 16 PAHs monitored in this study. However, given the wide range of organic compounds in the oil, a more detailed analysis should be conducted by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry for analytical confirmation.
