Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/7984This article deals with the territoriality and way of life of the river population of the island region of Ananindeua, with a focus on the island of João Pilatos, located around the Furo Maguari and around the other islands of the municipality, its mode of production and the desires lived by the families of the Island. In the communities, elements of river culture are identified in the construction of traditional tasks that are still transmitted through generations, how; as artisanal fishing, açaí management and vegetable gardens. It is understood that the river is not static in time, although itins its traditional practices, it receives various influences from modern society. The methodology used consists of bibliographic review and qualitative interviews with the local residents (older people, political leaders and others) to understand the local reality, the consultation of reports on the Amazon region was another means used for obtaining information. As a tool for data collection, a semi-structured questionnaire with open and closed questions and the observation on site were also used. The application of these methods makes it possible to study regional development and rethink public policies, which rarely include traditional communities. The results point to the lack of policies aimed at this population and its territory, such as access to health, education and basic sanitation, but these facts have not eliminated local political organization in search of better living conditions and access to civil rights. Despite so many adversities, it can be said that the river dwellers are resilient and preserve their way of life, it can be said that the rivers are resilient and preserve their way of life; producing polycultures with the family labour force and supplying the consumer market of the city of Ananindeua for generations. The lifestyle of riverside communities is directly influenced by rivers, and thus its importance in understanding local dynamics is evident.
