From a strategic point of view, especially in a sector that competes in costs and productivity such as mining, we have in the methodology of "Failure Analysis" an extremely important ally, because in this way we will be applying what we call "Maintenance Engineering", in constant search for solutions to the problems that negatively interfere with the indicators that measure the performance of the process areas. In this regard, this work presents a reliability study with the objective of increasing the availability of a reclaimer machine and stacker of a mining company directly involved in the iron ore production process. In order to reach this goal, this paper proposes the application of the RCM concepts through the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) tool, a simple tool, but of great value for improvement in reliability indices within maintenance area. For the implementation of the FMEA tool, it was necessary to map the entire system, identifying its functions, failure modes and their causes, in order to elaborate preventive, predictive, inspection and lubrication maintenance actions for each mode of failure. The results of the application of the tool pressed an overview, pointing out the main potential failure modes, as well as a better understanding of how the machine can fail, through determining the criticality indexes for the systems, reducing the probability of failure through defined actions. With the use of the tool it was possible to find the optimum point of maintenance through the Weibull distribution model.
