The research stems from the relevance of thermal management to ensure the reliability and lifetime of these devices, which, although characterized by high power density and long durability, are strongly affected by internal heat dissipation. A parametric geometry was built in Gmsh to represent the typical stacked structure of supercapacitors, consisting of aluminum current collectors, activated carbon electrodes, and polyethylene separators. Simulations were performed with different numbers of layers (2, 10, 30, 50), as well as variations in boundary conditions, internal heat generation, and separator thickness. Results showed that thermal dissipation exhibits a cumulative behavior throughout charge and discharge cycles, favoring the formation of hot spots. Increased ambient temperature and reduced convection intensified overheating, while more efficient cooling mitigated thermal accumulation. In addition, higher heat generation rates and increased separator thickness raised internal gradients, whereas reduced generation contributed to lower average temperatures. It is concluded that FEM-based thermal modeling is an effective tool to predict heat distribution in supercapacitors, enabling the identification of critical operating conditions and supporting thermal management strategies to improve device reliability and lifetime.
