The research objectives are to examine the impact of modernity on dress codes, discuss the importance of fashion for Belém's society, and problematize the photographic lens’s perspective on the society of that era. Methodologically, the research employs photography to analyze the clothing of subjects from that period, highlighting that the ideal of modernity, so widely propagated by the elites, did not reach the entire society. The research results indicate that clothing styles and photography acted as means of social distinction and distance. Fashion, through photography, presents a duality upon which the concept of a modern and civilized Belém was constructed, as seen through the subjects and their representations. Given this, the history of clothing in 19th-century Belém offers an indispensable key to understanding the dynamics and relations of the time. In this sense, fashion is not presented as a triviality; through photographs, it reveals the reflection of an era marked by triumph and economic, social, and cultural changes.
