Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/7911During the visit of the Holy Office to Grão-Pará, divergent practices were repressed, as seen in the case of Joana Maria, a Black enslaved woman whose spiritual and physical protection activities drew the attention of the Inquisition. Her trial reveals beliefs, resistance, and tensions between popular practices and the power of the Church and the State. Based on microhistory and the evidentiary paradigm, her beliefs, rituals, and daily practices are analyzed to understand spaces of female autonomy on the margins of society.
