Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/5495Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is defined as a syndrome of metabolic alterations in terms of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, which can be caused by a lack of insulin secretion (DM type 1) or by a decreased tissue sensitivity to the hormone (DM type 1). two). It is used as a reference for hypoglycemia glycemic values below 70mg/dL. The characteristic signs of a hypoglycemic condition are hunger, tremors, anxiety, dizziness, sweating, irritability, mental confusion, hallucinations, delusions or nervousness, and weakness. In severe cases, seizures, fainting, and coma. It is important to identify the causal factor of hypoglycemia and its impact on the quality of life of the diabetic patient, so that there is greater control over the disease and containment of physical and emotional damage. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the self perception of hypoglycemia in patients undergoing treatment for Diabetes Mellitus treated at a referral hospital in Belém do Pará. This is a crosssectionalanalytical observational study from data obtained at the Endocrinology Outpatient Clinic of the João de Barros Barreto University Hospital (HUJBB). The study population consisted of 381 patients with Diabetes Mellitus treated from April 2022 to July 2022, from the municipality of Belém and the interior of the State of Pará. All patients had Type I or Type II Diabetes Mellitus. Of the series studied, 266 patients (69.8%) reported having had episodes of hypoglycemia. Knowledge about the identification of at least one of the symptoms related to hypoglycemia was adequately answered by 86.8% of the parti cipants, being one of the main ways they used to recognize that they were having a hypoglycemic episode. However, only 25.5% of participants linked hypoglycemia with lower blood glucose measurements. The risk factors significantly associated with episodes of hypoglycemia were type 1 diabetes mellitus, drug regimen with insulin therapy, longer diagnosis time , and daily measurement of capillary blood glucose. The limitations identified in this study are the lack of identification of the educational level of the evaluated patients, since it is a factor that contributes to the ability to acquire knowledge and understanding about selfcare, and the informational bias since the information collected required the understanding of the participants to answer the questions and the application of the questionnaire was carried out by the researchers. Therefore, the use of insulin analogs and the diagnosis of T1DM are closely related and their predisposition to the risk of hypoglycemia is classically known. While the longer diagnosis time and the higher frequency of checks are factors related to the greater ability of individuals to identify a hypoglycemic episode and the longer time of living with the disease.
