Its accumulation in unventilated rooms causes concerns regarding public health, and repositories storing geological and fossil collections present increased risk to the users. The fossil collections house a large number of bones and rocks of different origins in poorly ventilated, sometimes underground rooms, usually with sealed windows. The inhalation and ingestion of Rn are among the main contributors to the dose of ionizing radiation received by the population and is the second cause of cancer in the respiratory tract after tobacco. European and North American geological services and museums warn against the risks and recommend mitigation measures in relation to geological collections (rocks and minerals, as well as fossils) by means of editing, regularly revising and making available manuals with radiation care plans for laboratories, collections and exhibition rooms. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the development of comprehensive radon programs for the public health, preferably linked to air quality programs. In this work, a design of experiment is proposed in detail to quantify the presence of radon with passive detectors in the rooms housing the fossil collections of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in the city of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. In those rooms, professors, students and employees spend several hours due to academic and research activities.Acesso AbertoRadioatividade naturalRadônioExposição ocupacionalColeções fósseisGeomedicinaCNPQ::CIENCIAS EXATAS E DA TERRA::GEOCIENCIASDesign de medição de radioatividade nas coleções fósseis da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Campus do Vale (Porto Alegre, RS).Trabalho de Curso - Graduação - Monografia
