Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9221The construction industry is one of the sectors with the highest consumption of natural resources and significant environmental impacts, both due to the intensive use of raw materials and the carbon dioxide emissions associated with Portland cement production. At the same time, bauxite mining in Brazil—one of the largest worldwide—generates large amounts of waste, including bauxite residue (RB) derived from the Bayer process. In this context, the present study aimed to develop and evaluate a normal-strength structural concrete (C30), in which natural crushed coarse aggregate was replaced by a synthetic aggregate produced from bauxite residue, assessing its physical and chemical durability as well as its mechanical performance. Accelerated alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) tests, chloride ion penetration tests, rebound hammer tests, and capillary water absorption tests were performed, in accordance with national and international standards. The results showed that the concrete with synthetic coarse aggregate (CAGS) presented satisfactory performance regarding AAR, superior resistance to chloride ion penetration, and maintained adequate mechanical strength even under aggressive environments. Furthermore, the porosity of the synthetic aggregate contributed to a more uniform distribution of moisture and reduced the concentration of deleterious compounds, without compromising the structural properties of the concrete. It can be concluded that the partial or total replacement of conventional crushed stone with synthetic aggregate from bauxite residue is technically feasible for normal strength structural concretes, meeting normative requirements and providing improvements in durability. In addition, the use of this residue represents a sustainable alternative for the construction industry, while adding value to a mineral byproduct of high environmental relevance.
