Acesso em:.http://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/740Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of the nervous system, which initially affects the brain regions responsible for the initiation of voluntary movements, being one of the most common neurological diseases nowadays. In addition to the common motor disturbances, virtually every patient with Parkinson's presents non-motor symptoms. Cognitive disorders figure among the most frequent non-motor symptoms of PD, which affect dramatically patient's quality of life. Dance therapy has been increasingly recognized as an effective therapeutic strategy, due to its highly complex neurophysiology, involving primary and associative neural processes that give rise to expression, creation, memory, perception and emotional aspects of dance, as well as the motor circuitry and the activation of the mirror neuron system, essential for cognitive processing. The present work aims to analyze the influence of dance therapy on the cognitive functions of patients with PD. We developed a care program for Parkinson's patients based on dance classes with a varied motor repertoire. The patients underwent tests with the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale - UPDRS and Frontal Assessment Battery - FAB before and after the six-month period of dance therapy classes. We found statistically significant differences in the results between the pre and post intervention evaluations.
