To control the spread of the virus, measures such as lockdowns and traffic restrictions were adopted, resulting in a reduction in the flow of people and vehicles in cities. Consequently, there was a drop in traffic accidents. In the Xingu region, as in other parts of Brazil, these accidents are one of the main causes of emergency care, hospitalizations and deaths, and stand out in the demand for SAMU. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of social distancing on SAMU traffic accident assistance in the Xingu region. METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective, quantitative study which collected data on external causes of traffic-related pre-hospital care on the e-SUS SAMU virtual platform. The information covers 7 of the main cities in the Xingu pole region in the state of Pará and covers the period from January 2018 to December 2022, relating and comparing the two years immediately prior to the pandemic and the three initial years of the pandemic, where the greatest social and health impacts could be observed. The 10 main reasons for external causes related to traffic in the urban areas of the cities covered were considered, and only incidents involving land vehicles and/or pedestrians on public roads. RESULTS: It was possible to observe that there was a considerable reduction in all the categories chosen, from the absolute numbers such as the total number of external cause cases (a 17% reduction) to more specific cases such as collisions between cars, where there was a 73% reduction when comparing the first and last year of the series analyzed. CONCLUSION: The strict social distancing measures, as well as raising awareness among the population through campaigns and the dissemination of knowledge and guidelines, have had a direct impact on the flow of people on the streets, as well as on their behavior in traffic, which has already been reduced, so it can be said that the number of people involved in accidents fell considerably during the period analyzed.
