Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8763This study aims to investigate the concept of metaphor in basic education, as well as to contribute to the expansion of functionalist studies in the field of teaching. To this end, based on a bibliographic review, the theoretical foundation of the linguistic studies analyzed is presented, namely functionalism, cognitive-functionalism, and the conception of metaphor beyond literary texts, as well as the foundations that underpin the textbook selected for the research. Furthermore, for data collection, a field study was carried out through a questionnaire administered to first-year high school students in a public school in the municipality of Abaetetuba. This qualitative research provided a better understanding of how students perceive and comprehend metaphor both in school texts and in real language use. Thus, in the first part of this work, the theoretical sections between the textbook and functionalist studies are presented in order to understand the differences between the analyzed materials. The second part is dedicated to the analysis of the questionnaire and to the relation between the students’ responses and the teaching conceptions through which they are developing their knowledge of the subject. The research revealed that metaphor in basic education is still largely restricted to figures of speech; however, it is possible to broaden this conception through more contextualized studies.
