This work consists of manufacturing polymer matrix composites with kaolin waste from an industry in the city of Barcarena, sieved in two particle size ranges (100 and 400 mesh of the Tyler series). It was manufactured using the hand lay-up method in silicone molds, without compression. The residue fractions were tested and used at 10% and 20% by mass. The matrix used was Crystal Orthophthalic Unsaturated Polyester, together with cobalt accelerator (1.5% v/v) and MEK-P initiator (1% v/v) for the crosslinking system. The apparent specific mass of the tailings was determined using the pycnometer method. The tailings were characterized by mineralogical analysis using X-ray diffraction and morphological analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The manufactured specimens were subjected to physical tests of Water Absorption, Apparent Porosity and Apparent Specific Mass, in accordance with ASTM standards D570, D2734 and D792, respectively. The mechanical properties were analyzed using the tensile test (ASTM D638). Finally, the rate of flame propagation was determined by the horizontal flammability test (ASTM D635). The mineralogical analysis of the tailings by XRD showed peaks of kaolinite and quartz, while the morphological analysis by SEM identified the pseudo-hexagonal shapes of the particles, as well as the variation in size between the particle sizes studied. In the physical tests, the physical properties of the composites increased as the particles were added to the polymer matrix. The tensile strength of the composites showed a decline in relation to the polymer matrix and was not an effective reinforcement, although the series of composites with 400 mesh particulates showed greater efficiency compared to the 100 mesh series. The horizontal flammability test made it possible to discuss the influence of kaolin's inorganic charge on polymer composites, as it is a good flame retardant agent, especially for the series with a 20% mass proportion of kaolin tailings, meeting ASTM D635 and CONTRAN 498 standards. Based on the study carried out, the application of kaolin tailings from processing is an alternative for the production of composites, with a view to improving the specific properties of the final material, and possible application, such as wall partitions, panels, and other places where high mechanical stress is not required.
