Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9452The analysis of new materials in civil construction is essential to ensure performance, durability, and safety, especially in masonry systems, in this context, the comparison between conventional and polymeric mortars stands out, as they emerge as alternatives to the traditional method. The objective of this study was to carry out a comparative analysis between polymeric and conventional mortar in the laying of ceramic blocks for masonry walls, evaluating their physical and mechanical properties and the performance of the constructed masonry. The methodology consisted of experimental laboratory research, including material characterization, tests on mortars in the fresh state (consistency index, mass density, and water retention) and in the hardened state (flexural tensile strength and axial compressive strength), as well as the construction of masonry prototypes monitored over six weeks regarding surface and integrity conditions, such as cracks, joint condition, surface moisture, efflorescence, color change, and warping. The main results indicated that, in the fresh state tests, the mortars showed practically equivalent consistency indices, ensuring adequate comparison conditions, although differences were observed in mass density, with higher values for the polymeric mortar, indicating a more cohesive microstructure; regarding water retention, the conventional mortar satisfactorily met normative parameters. In the hardened state, the conventional mortar presented coherent and progressive mechanical development, whereas the polymeric mortar did not develop significant strength, indicating low internal cohesion. In the masonry prototypes exposed to natural conditions, greater stability and integrity of the joints were observed in the conventional mortar system, while the polymeric mortar system showed localized degradation in vertical joints and greater sensitivity to execution conditions. Thus, under the analyzed conditions, the polymeric mortar did not demonstrate superior performance compared to the conventional mortar, highlighting the need for greater technological control, proper application criteria, and verification of material compatibility.
