The research stems from the growing recognition of Agroecology as an approach capable of promoting sustainable development in rural areas and seeks to understand how this concept is interpreted and implemented within extension activities. The methodology adopted is bibliographic, documentary, and qualitative, including semistructured interviews with six extensionists working in the local offices of the municipalities of Acará, Abaetetuba, Cametá, and Limoeiro do Ajuru. The results reveal a diversity of interpretations regarding Agroecology among the professionals interviewed: while some maintain a more technical and traditional view of agriculture, others incorporate aspects related to sustainability, the appreciation of local knowledge, and the articulation between scientific knowledge and traditional practices. Although the extensionists are familiar with the Pnater policy, it is not widely applied, as Agroecology—its central foundation—is seldom addressed in the actions and services provided. Despite some institutional progress in disseminating the concept of Agroecology, challenges remain in effectively adopting and implementing agroecological practices due to limited financial resources, a workforce primarily trained in traditional agrarian sciences, and institutional constraints such as difficulties in field transportation. It is concluded that, although there have been advances, the understanding and application of Agroecology in Emater-PA’s extension work in the Tocantins region still need improvement. Strengthening the continuous training of extension professionals and aligning Emater-PA’s actions more clearly with public Agroecology policies are essential steps. Investing in specific training, enhancing support from public institutions, educational and research organizations, and civil society, as well as expanding partnerships for knowledge dissemination, can provide effective technical support for transitioning from conventional production methods to more sustainable practices. Hiring professionals trained in Agroecology is also a crucial measure to support family farming, ensure food security, and protect the environment in the Lower Tocantins region.
