However, despite the numerous benefits, there are sociopsychocultural factors that can lead to the interruption of the process. Among these factors is the intervention of matriarchs, who occupy a respectful place in the family system, and may promote or discourage breastfeeding. Objective: To describe how grandparent participation can encourage the practice of breastfeeding newborn infants in a reference maternity ward. Methodology: This is a qualitative observational study conducted with 40 grandparents who were accompanying mothers who were admitted to a ChildFriendly Hospital from September to November 2019. Information was collected through semistructured interviews with preestablished questions form, recorded through audio recording. Data were structured in four major thematic areas and analyzed according to Bardin's content analysis technique. Results: Grandmothers participate at the time of breastfeeding by providing help and advice to nursing mothers. They recognize the benefits of breast milk and encourage breastfeeding but advise the use of other foods before six months. Regarding Exclusive Breastfeeding, there was little knowledge on the subject. It was possible to know their experience, which was mostly positive. Conclusion: Given the importance of grandparents in the family context and their participation in the care of grandchildren, it is concluded that there is a need to include them in health promotion actions to broaden their knowledge about breastfeeding, making them encouraging breastfeeding.
