Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9127This paper addresses diatopic sociolinguistics and linguistic prejudice, focusing on the speech of university students. The objective is to reflect on linguistic prejudice in the academic space of UFPA in Altamira; to analyze the causes and to inform how academics have dealt with linguistic differences. The research is based on the theoretical studies of Saussure (2006), Bagno (2007), Bakhtin (1990), Labov (2008), Tarallo (2005) among others. The methodology used combines bibliographic research and field data collection, including interviews and questionnaires applied to students of the Federal University of Pará, Altamira campus, with quantitative and qualitative analysis that supported the writing of an explanatory text of the main occurrences. The results show that, although linguistic variation is a reflection of cultural diversity, it is often the target of prejudice, especially in educational contexts. The study sample concluded that, although most students had already suffered some type of linguistic prejudice, they learned to deal with the situation.
