Therefore, we chose the following questions: What conceptions guide the assessment of learning in the elementary school classroom? How to evaluate for a critical and citizen education? What should be prioritized in the evaluation process that supports the development of citizenship? The study is characterized as a bibliographic qualitative approach and has the contribution of writings by authors such as Tyler (1979), Libâneo (1994), Depresbiteris (1997), Haydt (1995), Saul (2010), Hoffmann (2001, 2008, 2012), Luckesi (2003) and others. The analysis reveals that in basic school, an assessment of learning based on classification and quantitative perspectives is still privileged. This means that the evaluation turns to judge, to measure in view of obtaining results in external evaluations. The challenge for schools and their teachers to reverse this logic involves critical reflections on the pedagogical and methodological actions and practices adopted.
