The aim of this work is to use mental maps as a didactic resource for building critical subjects, with the environmental issue as the theme. Our hypothesis is that students are active subjects who perceive space through a critical spatial vision and are therefore capable of representing their space using mental maps. The results obtained from an activity carried out in an elementary school in Altamira - PA show that the students were able to reproduce the geographical space with the theme of rubbish in mind.
