Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9982In the digital age, social media platforms have become central spaces for social interaction, accelerating the evolution of language and reshaping contemporary communicative practices. Against this backdrop, this study investigates the process of linguistic re-signification in virtual environments, with a particular focus on Instagram. To this end, instances were identified and analyzed in which established Portuguese terms acquired new meanings through online interactions. The theoretical framework draws upon the contributions of Marcuschi (2004), Bechara (2004), Carvalho (2006) and Alves (2007), their studies on the lexicon, neologisms, and semantic shifts support an understanding of the linguistic changes resulting from new contexts of use. Methodologically, a qualitative, exploratory approach was adopted, based on the analysis of posts from the platform in question. The results demonstrate that social media platforms function as genuine linguistic laboratories, where pre-existing words are constantly reconfigured to reflect current behaviors, values, and cultural dynamics. The study concludes that semantic neologism is not a marginal phenomenon but rather living evidence of the Portuguese language's dynamic, malleable, and adaptable nature in the face of societal change. Instagram, in particular, proved to be a prime ecosystem for this renewal.
