On the eastern edge of the basin, near the towns of Pimenteiras and Picos (Piauí), are found excellent outcrops of this unit in drainages, road cuts and mountain slopes. The analysis of facies and architectural elements allowed to reconstruct the paleoenvironments and to characterize the depositional geometry of Pimenteiras Formation. Seven sedimentary facies were defined, grouped into two facies associations (FA) and three architectural elements have been proposed, which record continental shelf marine deposits (epicontinental) in influenced by storm waves. The FA1 – offshore – is mainly composed of shale. The parallel laminated siltstone occur locally. The FA2 – transitional offshore – is represented by shale, parallel laminated siltstone, wavy laminated siltstone, massive sandstone, parallel laminated sandstone, wavy and cross laminated sandstone as will as hummocky cross bedded sandstone. The intercalation of facies is expressive in AF2. The FA of Pimenteiras Formation form a retrograding-progradational pattern that correspond to shallowing upward cycles, probably related to relative changes in sea-level. The sandstones of the tops of cycles (FA2) are interpreted as stratigraphic levels able to represent reservoir rocks and the shales of FA1 are the potential generators rocks. The contact between the Pimenteiras and Cabeças formations is discordant and marked by facies with different genesis.
