Orientador: Silvia Keiko Kawakami. 2022. 55 f. Trabalho de Curso (Bacharelado em Oceanografia) – Faculdade de Oceanografia, Instituto de Geociências, Universidade Federal do Pará, Belém, 2022. Disponível em: https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/4263.Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/4263The year 2011 dates the beginning of the occurrence of large invasions of pelagic sargasso in the coast of Brazil, with records at sea and strandings on beaches along the North and Northeastern coast of the country. Sargasso is a brown alga belonging to the genus Sargassum and is typical of tropical regions, notably in the Sargasso Sea. Floating sargasso in Atlantic Ocean waters is guided by surface ocean currents. In addition to Brazil, other regions recently affected by the massive sargasso stranding, such as West Africa, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, are also subject to negative effects on the quality of beaches, biota and local communities. On the other hand, pelagic sargasso biomass has an important ecological role, and is a valuable raw material, which can be used in the production of fertilizers, biofuels and as an input for the civil construction, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. In this work, we provide a review of the causes and socioeconomic and environmental problems associated with sargasso standings, as well as the biochemical constitution and potential applications of this macroalgae. Previous data produced by the group of the Oceanography Laboratory of UFPA was also considered and included concentrations of phosphorus, total proteins, ashes and moisture from samples collected in Salinópolis during 2015. In this way, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the management and use of the pelagic seaweed that reaches the Brazilian coast.
