Nature's resources may become exhausted or not, depending on your time to form and management their use. In the city of Itupiranga / PA happens handmade clay mining several years ago, the potters have no ecological knowledge about this practice, causing damage almost always unrecoverable. The aim of this study was to realize an environmental diagnosis of the potter's activity in the city, driving on the use of natural resources, doing the potters themselves realize the importance of irrational extraction of raw material clay. The methodology applied was a preliminary literature search, field observations, questionnaires, pictures, informal conversations. In the area of pottery there are on an avarege 15 margin of the Tocantins River, in this area occur to till beneficiation of the clay. They are made of bricks and tiles simple two holes, and these products go through the following processes: mining, molding, drying, storage and sales. The clientele of the pottery is made mostly by the class of low purchasing power. Some problems caused by improper mining of clay: the removal of riparian vegetation, leaving the fragile slopes, loss of native vegetation; frightening fauna, formation of ponds and proliferation of insects, pollution of river water, strong clutter in the brick kilns, lack of technical knowledge of potters to make better use of raw material and for the residents the lack of perception of the local environmental problems. Some suggestions: restoring the ground level in some areas, leveling can be done in smaller holes with the use of machines; Reinstate the vegetation with native species, leisure areas and areas for study of environmental education training courses for potters and environmental education campaigns to society in general.
