Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9811This study addresses the sociocultural imagination surrounding the term “evil eye” in the village of Curupaiti, located in the municipality of Viseu, Pará, Brazil, considering the different ways this belief is understood and named by residents from different generations. Based on the assumption that language and culture are closely linked to the experiences and values shared within a community, the research aimed to investigate the meanings attributed to the evil eye, identify its lexical variations, and analyze the role of orality in the transmission of this knowledge. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative-quantitative approach was adopted through bibliographic research and fieldwork, using semi-structured interviews applied to community residents. The findings revealed that the belief in the evil eye remains present in the local sociocultural imagination, although it is interpreted differently across generations. Older participants tend to associate it with spiritual influences, illnesses, and traditional protective practices, whereas younger participants relate it mainly to envy and negative feelings. The study also identified lexical variants such as olho gordo, quebranto, quebrante, olho ruim, and inveja, demonstrating the linguistic and cultural richness of the community. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of orality in preserving and transmitting this knowledge, contributing to the maintenance of collective memory and cultural identity.
