There are different types of diabetes mellitus, but this study addressed and classified only two types: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetic retinopathy occurs due to microvascular complications that are specific to DM. It is one of the main causes of irreversible vision loss and is considered the leading cause of blindness in the world in people with active lives. Thus, we intended to analyze the clinical and epidemiological profile of patients with diabetic retinopathy treated at a private clinic in the city of Altamira-PA. This was an observational, cross-sectional study, conducted by consulting data available in the medical records of patients who will be treated at an ophthalmology clinic in the city of Altamira, in the state of Pará. Statistical analysis was performed using the Bioestat program, and Pearson's chi-square test was used for categorical variables. It was observed that most patients were female, aged between 69 and 78 years, had hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hypertensive retinopathy, and mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The results of the research are in line with other international studies that corroborate the findings. Thus, this study warns of the importance of early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy, since a simple fundus examination can prevent the progression of the pathology to more severe forms, thus preventing significant vision loss.
