Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8764This Final Paper analyzes reading and writing practices in the final years of Elementary School, focusing on the performance of Portuguese Language teachers at State elementary and secondary school São Miguel, located in Vila de Beja, Abaetetuba–PA. The research starts from the observation that, despite advances in literacy, many students still present significant difficulties in reading comprehension and text production, leading to situations of functional illiteracy. In this context, the study aimed to understand how teachers face challenges such as the lack of teaching resources, the linguistic and cultural diversity of students, and the constant need for pedagogical innovation. This qualitative research was based on literature review, participant observation, interviews with teachers, focus groups with students, and documentary analysis of school materials. Theoretical contributions from authors such as Magda Soares(2004), Paulo Freire(1996), Emília Ferreiro(1985), Vygotsky(1991), Ângela Kleiman(1995), and Brian Street(1984) were used to discuss literacy, reading and writing, and pedagogical practices. The results indicate that teaching practices related to reading and writing need to be re-signified, prioritizing contextualized, critical, and inclusive methodologies that promote students’ autonomy and the understanding of language as a social practice.
