Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9544This study presents a bibliographic review of the main difficulties encountered in the teaching and learning of algebra in years of elementary school. The research was based on academic productions published between 2015 and 2025, retrieved from databases such as Google Scholar and SciELO, including scientific articles, dissertations, and undergraduate theses. The results show that students difficulties are multifactorial, involving conceptual, methodological, cognitive, and training aspects. The main obstacles identified include the limited understanding of the meaning of letters, excessive mechanization of activities, the difficult transition from arithmetic to algebra, and the lack of contextualization of content. Psychological factors were also highlighted, such as math anxiety and low self-esteem, in addition to the insufficiency of initial and continuing teacher training for working with algebra. Despite this scenario, some studies point to promising alternatives, such as the use of investigative methodologies, games, digital resources, and pattern exploration activities, which may support the construction of meaning and the development of algebraic thinking.
