Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/10199This study addresses the history of Barão de Capanema Avenue, considered one of the main urban and historical landmarks of the municipality of Capanema, in the state of Pará, Brazil. The objective of this research was to understand the importance of the avenue in the formation and development of the city, highlighting its relationship with the former Bragança Railway and its contribution to the construction of the local collective memory. The research is qualitative in nature, with a descriptive and exploratory approach, and was conducted through bibliographic and documentary research, as well as fieldwork. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with longtime residents of the municipality, whose reports made it possible to identify the transformations that have taken place along the avenue over time and its significance to the local population. The results showed that the railway played a fundamental role in the economic, social, and urban development of Capanema by facilitating the movement of people, goods, and information. After the railway tracks were removed, the area was transformed into the present-day Barão de Capanema Avenue, which has become the city's main commercial center and an important public gathering space. The interviews also revealed that the memory of the railway remains alive in the recollections of older residents, although this history is little known among younger generations.
