Despite advances, significant challenges persist, such as the scarcity of accessible teaching materials, communication barriers, and the lack of teacher preparedness for inclusive practices. This study aims to understand the academic literacy of deaf students by examining written production through textual genres, analyzing writing strategies, investigating teaching methods used by hearing teachers, and discussing contributions from scientific literature on bilingual practices. The research adopts a qualitative approach, applying questionnaires via Google Forms with hearing and deaf students, teachers, and an interpreter. The results indicate that, although deaf students’ participation still depends on support and mediation, their motivation, autonomy, and appreciation of deaf identity contribute to active engagement in academic activities. These findings reinforce the importance of implementing policies and pedagogical practices that promote inclusion and diversity in the university environment.
