It focuses on local research conducted in the state of Pará in the humanities postgraduate program at UFPA, which analyzed problems related to the Belém Metropolitan Region (RMB) and linked, above all, to the Center for Advanced Amazonian Studies (NAEA). In an effort to understand the institutional conditions that enabled the stimulation of research on the Amazonian urban environment in Pará between the 1960s and 1970s, proposing original solutions, I attempt to reconstruct the history and trajectory of this “academic body,” highlighting an emblematic event, little publicized by its main collaborators and described in the texts of its local repertoire: the internal split of the NAEA, which occurred in 1992. I start from a diagnosis, made by local researchers, of a tendency toward fragmentation in the research agenda on urban issues in the RMB in disciplinary subjects, questioning the motivations that led to this behavior in the postgraduate environment in the humanities at UFPA. I propose, as an alternative, that this fragmentation can be better explained by direct correlations with the trajectory of this field of activity itself, observed in the weakening of the “interdisciplinary arrangement” due to the faculty split in NAEA. To this end, I follow two lines of interpretation of the fact: the institutional uproar, named by Samuel Sá et al. as the “ivory tower,” and the interpersonal disagreements described by Heraldo Maués, both of which are confirmed by Edna Castro.
