Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9298The determination of the causes of insufficient capacity of drainage systems in Brazil in the context of climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme rainfall is a subject of scientific study, as it is essential to understand these causes in order to address this situation in a way that prevents disasters. Thus, with the main objective of evaluating the influence of recent additions to historical data series on the determination of design rainfall intensity values, based on the establishment of intense rainfall expressions (IDF expressions) and pairs of return period and time of concentration recommended by DNIT and DER/SP, five Brazilian cities were selected, one in each region of the country (Castanhal/PA – North; fortaleza/CE – Northeast; Terenos/MS – Central-West; Belo Horizonte – Southeast; and Guaíba/RS – South). Five rainfall stations located in these cities were chosen, and for each one, four IDF expressions were established by varying the amount of rainfall data in their historical series through the inclusion of 1, 5, and 10 years of the most recent records, counted up to the end of 2024. The results obtained indicate that the standard deviation of the data sample plays a dominant role in determining the highest values. Furthermore, they show that extending the rainfall records of the selected stations by one, five, or ten recent years generates differences in design rainfall intensity values of at most 9.09%, suggesting causes other than the increase in design rainfall intensity due to climate change for the rise in discharge and occurrences of drainage system insufficiency.
