Symptom networks, as they are known, can offer a differentiated perspective on this topic by relating mental disorders to the symptoms presented, and showing that the symptoms affect each other, discarding the idea of a common cause. Some steps were taken in order to achieve this goal, they are: (i) Study of the complex networks and understandanding of how they can be applied in the construction of relationship webs; (ii) Propose possibilities of employing complex networks in psychopathology, more specifically, in the analysis of mental disorders; (iii) Use the complex networks as an alternative for data visualization. To this end, a questionnaire originally prepared at the Institute of Psychology from the University of Virginia, USA, was answered by 50 Brazilian mothers of young children. The questions of the questionnaire, in majority, seek to verify how exhausting or even distressing the process of raising a child can be. Analyzing the data presented through complex networks, it was noted that there were mothers who stated that their children irritate them enough for most of the questions in the questionnaire, which leads directly to a situation of high stress. Unfortunately, in this study, it was not possible to relate such levels of tension with any mental disorder on the side of the interviewees. However, in the literature review, the authors show that high stress levels are more evident in mothers of newborns and children who had some type of disorder or disease. The examination of mental disorders is a complicated problem and the analysis of the results obtained only strengthen the importance of giving professionals and those interested in the field new perspectives on how to study such disorders. However, the complexity of such disorders and functioning of the human mind are the main challenges to be tackled for the implementation of networks in psychopathology.
