The proximity of these environments to large cities exposes them to several structural and environmental interferences of human origin. The present study aims to carry out a bibliographic survey on the use of fish communities to evaluate the environmental quality of estuaries in Brazil and how human activities are affecting the aquatic biota. Studies were obtained from the four regions belong to the Brazilian coast, where the State of Pará presented the greatest number of studies, with a total of four studies, with the best class of integrity, with a good integrity index. The other regions, the Northeast, Southeast and South, had fewer studies and a low class of integrity, with regular, poor, and very poor results. The adaptation of the index requires the use of metrics that best represent the biological and ecological characteristics of the region. The metrics most used to evaluate the Brazilian estuaries were phenology, species distribution, trophic ecology, and sexual maturation of the collected species. The most recurrent environmental impacts in estuarine regions, were the discharge of liquid effluents (domestic and/or industrial), the presence of portuary, industrial fishing, and the fragmentation of the riparian forest. The review shows that the ichthyofauna, as IBI, was able to assess the environmental quality of estuaries in Brazil, but the low number of studies leads to a lack of knowledge about the quality of most estuaries in Brazil, which hinders the formulation of plans for management and preservation of these environments.
