Acesso em:.http://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/1778The present study is to characterize the macroinfaunal communities associated with saltmarsh vegetation at Algodoal/Maiandeua island, on the northeast coast of Pará Coast. Samples were performed over macroinfauna, sediment and vegetation in three periods (November 2007 , April 2008 and November 2008) to determination of possible changes in abundance and composition of organisms relate to local characteristics of vegetation and sediment. 36 replicates for the macroinfauna associated with saltmarshes were collected; 12 individual replicas for vegetation and others 12 individual replicas for sediment. The main results showed that the amount of fine sediments and organic matter content increased over the periods and that were higher in the upper layers of sediment. For vegetation, an increase of height and density of vegetation was observed throughout the period. The macroinfauna also showed temporal changes in abundance and diversity of species associated with environmental changes and showed significant increase among periods for both characteristics. The abundance and diversity of macroinfauna were concentrated in the upper layers of sediment. In conclusion, processes of ecological succession seem to be occurring in the structure of macroinfauna associated to saltmarsh vegetation at Algodoal / Maiandeua island.
