Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9950The genus Microsternarchus belongs to the Hypopomidae, a family of electric fish within the order Gymnotiformes, commonly known as tuviras and sarapós. These fish are primarily characterized by their ability to produce electric discharges for communication, environmental perception, protection, and feeding. Currently, the genus comprises three species. Based on analyses of specimens collected from igarapés in the coastal Amazon region of northeastern Pará, a new species is described for the Caeté River basin. Morphometric analyses followed specialized literature and were measured using a Mitutoyo caliper to the nearest tenth of a millimeter. Meristic parameters were obtained through direct observations aided by a stereomicroscope. Osteological analyses were conducted using specimens that had been diaphanized according to a specific protocol. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the shape of the caudal filament, which is laterally flattened (vs. cylindrical), and by the elongated urogenital papilla in females, particularly during the reproductive periods (vs. papillae adjacent to the anus).
