In this context, medicinal plants represent an important complementary therapeutic resource, particularly in Latin America, where traditional knowledge remains widely practiced. This study aimed to conduct an integrative literature review on the ethnobotanical use of medicinal plants for the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Latin American countries. The literature search was performed in the SciELO, LILACS, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using descriptors related to ethnobotany, medicinal plants, diabetes mellitus, and Latin America in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, covering publications from 2015 to 2025. The selected studies were analyzed according to country, plant species, botanical family, plant part used, preparation methods, and evidence of hypoglycemic activity. The results revealed a wide diversity of medicinal species, with emphasis on Bauhinia forficata, Cissus sicyoides, Syzygium cumini, Momordica charantia, and Moringa oleifera. Leaves were the most frequently used plant part, followed by fruits, bark, roots, and seeds, while infusions and decoctions were the predominant preparation methods. This preference may be associated with the greater availability of leaves and their high concentration of secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and tannins, which are commonly linked to antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities. Traditional knowledge remains an important complementary therapeutic resource and may support future pharmacological research and the development of herbal medicines.
