Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9016The current environmental crisis highlights the need to rethink the relationship between development and sustainability, and Environmental Education (EE) emerges as a strategic tool to form critical and conscious citizens, as established by the National Environmental Education Policy (Law No. 9,795/1999) and the Federal Constitution, which guarantee the right to a balanced environment. This study aimed to analyze how the environmental education practices of the Environmental Education Directorate (DEA) of the Municipal Environmental Secretariat of Abaetetuba (SEMEIA) contribute to the formation of a critical and participatory environmental awareness among the population. Three specific objectives were defined: to contextualize educational and environmental policies, to identify the DEA's actions, and to evaluate their impacts in the municipality. The research constitutes a case study based on documentary analysis and literature review, using the 2024 editions of the SEMEAR magazine, official SEMEIA documents, and academic articles from sources such as SciELO and Google Scholar as primary references, aiming to clearly understand the environmental education initiatives and their results across different dimensions of sustainability. The results indicate that the DEA carried out 44 environmental, 12 social, and 8 economic actions, reaching schools, rural and riverside communities, and partner institutions. Among these initiatives are selective waste collection, eco-jewelry and ecological soap workshops, training of community health agents, educational projects in schools, and commemorative campaigns such as Amazon Day and Tree Day. Environmental actions reinforce biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices; social actions promote inclusion, participatory education, and cultural appreciation; and economic actions encourage income generation and circular economy practices. Intersectoral coordination between public agencies, civil society, and communities was essential to expand the reach and effectiveness of these initiatives. The final considerations point out that when contextualized to the local territory and implemented in an integrated manner, EE constitutes an essential tool for sustainable development, promoting awareness, strengthening citizenship, preserving the environment, and generating economic opportunities.
