The objective was to introduce the cordel genre into the daily routine of the Portuguese language classroom of Elementary School. Research was done in the period from May 11 to June 15, 2018, through a case study, with qualitative descriptive research using a bibliographical survey of authors who adhere to the theme such as: Abreu (1999), Aguiar (1996) ), Assis, (2011), Brito (2001), Candido (1972), Chartier (2011), Cosson (2014), Freire (2008), Lajolo (1993), Lajolo questionnaire and also with activities. In addition to quantitative research reporting the percentages of students in relation to reading, literature and cordel literature, as well as emphasizing the importance of cordel literature for more playful and practical use within the classroom.
