The research investigates the perceptions of local residents and visitors regarding public conservation policies, aiming to contrast the existing legal framework with the actual use and occupation of the space. The objective is to deepen the understanding of the paradox between the island's recognition as a valuable geological and paleontological site and its increasing degradation. The methodology adopted was qualitative research, combining bibliographic and documentary surveys with semi-structured interviews. This approach provided a platform for a group that is often excluded from debates concerning the management of their own resources. The results demonstrate that the community perceives a significant gap between legislation and its practical application, evidenced by ineffective oversight, the proliferation of unregulated construction, and improper waste disposal. The study concludes that preserving the island requires a paradigm shift focused not only on creating new laws but on enforcing existing ones through participatory management.
