Taking into account the role of public libraries, the study has shown through bibliographical analyzes how fundamental is its importance to society. The aim was to demonstrate the concept of public libraries, and the relevance of the BCS to the Curro Velho Foundation, but also to the community to which it is inserted. Through an exploratory research carried out at the Carmem Sousa Library, it obtained conclusions through field research that were proven from the data obtained.
