Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/jspui/handle/prefix/6903The Giant African Snail (Achatina fulica) was introduced to Brazil in the 1980s to be raised for human consumption. However, it has spread throughout the country and is a non-indigenous species of great concern due to its impacts on human and veterinary health, and on the environment and native biodiversity. Information campaigns on the correct and safe way to identify, handle and dispose of A. fulica, especially when aimed at schools, can play a decisive role in the successful control and eradication of A. fulica. With this in mind, this study investigates the perception of 7th and 8th grade students at a public school in the north-east of Pará about this non-indigenous species. To this end, field research was carried out, characterized by investigations, bibliographical and documentary surveys and data collection and analysis, with the aim of understanding the students' knowledge in relation to environmental biodiversity and health, involving the introduced species. The results indicate a wide range of perceptions, as well as a lack of knowledge about the origin, risks and the correct way to control A. fulica. In view of this, we suggest implementing actions aimed at disseminating this knowledge, especially about the proper handling of the animal, and raising awareness among the population, specifically students, about the impact of this mollusc on the environment and health. To this end, we emphasize the need for engagement between schools, local health authorities, families, students and society in general, both in urban and rural areas.
