Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9463This study aims to report and analyze an experience in teaching Geography based on school cartography, developed in rural schools located in rural settlements (agrovilas) in the municipality of Castanhal (PA), Brazil. It is grounded on the understanding that Geography teaching should consider lived space as a central element in knowledge construction, bringing curricular content closer to students’ realities. The methodology is characterized as an experience report conducted with 6th-grade classes of Elementary Education, within the scope of Basic Education, through a didactic sequence that included the assessment of prior knowledge, the discussion of geographic concepts, and the production of mental maps representing the home-school route, as well as the incorporation of family narratives. The results indicate advances in the development of geographical reasoning, particularly in the understanding of the concepts of place and territory, as well as in the strengthening of students’ territorial identity. At the same time, challenges related to the structural conditions of rural schools were identified, such as limitations in teaching resources and accessibility issues.
